Join the Centre on African Philanthropy and Social Investment (CAPSI), in partnership with the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy and the International Society for Third-Sector Research (ISTR), for the third webinar in the Emerging Scholars Series, designed to strengthen research capacity among emerging scholars in philanthropy across sub-Saharan Africa.
This 75-minute webinar will explore three rapidly evolving areas shaping philanthropy and nonprofit practice:
Innovative Financing Models in the Nonprofit Sector
Explore emerging approaches such as impact investing, blended finance, guarantees, crowdfunding, social enterprise and community-based capital, with a focus on accessibility, sustainability, governance, accountability and social outcomes.
AI and Philanthropy
Examine the growing use of artificial intelligence in fundraising, grantmaking, data analytics, monitoring and evaluation, service delivery and organisational management, alongside critical questions around bias, privacy, data quality, transparency and human oversight.
Climate Philanthropy
Consider the role of philanthropy in supporting locally led climate action, renewable energy, green jobs, climate-resilient livelihoods, youth-led initiatives and a just transition, with particular attention to long-term sustainability and community ownership.
The discussion will place African contexts at the centre, exploring the contemporary issues these developments raise and identifying the research needed to better understand their implications across diverse African settings.
Through expert-led discussion and an audience Q&A, emerging scholars will be encouraged to identify focused research questions, relevant theoretical perspectives, appropriate methodologies and potential data sources. The session will also explore cross-cutting issues of power, equity, accountability, governance and the importance of locally grounded knowledge in shaping the future of philanthropy research.
