Who We Are

The Centre on African Philanthropy and Social Investment (CAPSI) is a pan-African centre of excellence advancing knowledge, leadership, partnerships and innovation in philanthropy and social investment. Based at Wits Business School, University of the Witwatersrand, CAPSI serves as a leading platform for shaping the future of philanthropy and social investment in Africa and beyond.

We generate and share African-centred knowledge through research, academic programmes, short courses, publications, convenings, dialogues and strategic initiatives. Our work strengthens the capacity of the philanthropic and social investment ecosystem by developing the next generation of African leaders, practitioners, researchers and academics, while supporting organisations and institutions to create meaningful and sustainable social impact.

CAPSI brings together academia, philanthropy, business, government, civil society and other stakeholders to foster collaboration, exchange knowledge and develop innovative approaches to addressing Africa’s social and development challenges. Through our partnerships across the continent, we contribute to building stronger institutions, networks and systems that advance a more inclusive and sustainable culture of giving and social investment.

While our work is firmly rooted in African contexts, knowledge and experiences, our ambition extends beyond the continent. CAPSI seeks to contribute African perspectives, insights and thought leadership to global conversations on philanthropy, social investment and social impact, while connecting Africa to partners, ideas and opportunities beyond Africa.
