CAPSI and the Open Society Foundations (OSF) co-hosted a public lecture with Binaifer Nowrojee, OSF President. She called for philanthropy to move beyond short projects to long-term ecosystem support, pairing Ubuntu with moral imagination.
In her keynote, Binaifer called for a new vision of philanthropy amid interlocking crises, climate change, inequality, eroding trust, and receding aid. She urged funders to listen, shift power, and move beyond short-term projects to long-horizon support that nurtures movements and ecosystems. She outlined OSF’s internal shifts towards simplified processes, multi-year (5–8 year) grants, and long-term Global South partnerships.
The lecture was followed by a panel discussion moderated by Nicolette Naylor, with Banaifer joined by H.E. Mrs. Graça Machel, globally celebrated elder and Dr. Naledi Pandor stressed African agency, local giving, and investment in universities and innovation.
A dynamic panel discussion followed. Mrs. Machel pressed for true partnership and long-term programme horizons, while Dr. Pandor emphasised African agencies, local giving, investment in universities, and innovation. The conversation highlighted the need for philanthropy, government, business, and academia to work together to build resilient, justice-focused ecosystems.
